MPB Edmonton (2005)

Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, Edmonton, Alberta presented the opportunity to have conversations with people about that event and the unique form of entertainment that a fringe theatre festival presents. There was a crush of people roaming a kind of ‘carnivalesque midway’ and many were interested in talking. Some were deciding which plays to take in; some were more involved as playwrights, actors, or peers of currently showing playwrights. As theatre was the focus of the event, I did some research and put together a few notes about Shakespeare’s Mid Summer Night’s Dream, questions surrounding the dramatical concepts of comedy and tragedy, and I usually asked each person to tell me who was her/his favourite playwright or play. We also talked about the excitement of Edmonton’s Fringe Festival, the buskers; and Carlynn and Jonathon of the Imagiscape Theatre broke into an impromptu scene from their play. A large crowd had gathered around us as I interviewed them – Suddenly they were leaping, tossing and catching each other while throwing dialogue back and forth. The crowd made a collective exclamation of awe, and then moved back to form a large ring around me and this expressive pair of performers. When they finished, they bowed, the audience applauded, and we all went away after experiencing something very spontaneously and exciting. During the performance, I was taping the duo and passersby were able to simultaneously view the performance from my point of view. Half way through the evening, I switched the MPB program to show recent video works of Daniel Dugas and myself. People followed me through the crowd to view the tapes
